Adult Treatment
No matter your age, you deserve a smile of which you are proud. You might not realize that we can fix your tooth alignment no matter what your age is. Braces are not just for children anymore. We can get you the smile you deserve!
Early Treatment
Dr. Quast recommends optimizing the jaw width on the growing patient. The jaws are very often too narrow which results in dental crowding, impacted teeth, teeth erupting too far facially which results in thin bone and gum tissue covering the tooth roots of the erupting permanent teeth, which can contribute to recession on those teeth.
Narrow jaws can also result in airway obstructed breathing by providing too little tongue space in the mouth. Optimizing jaw width through the use of orthopedic jaw expansion reduces the need for extraction of permanent teeth or tooth polishing. It can also increase airway size by enlarging the nasal cavity and increasing the oral cavity size which allows for more tongue space, so the tongue has room to move forward, away from the back of the throat.
Clear Aligners
A set of clear aligners is the newest form of braces. The aligners are invisible and removable, making them very popular. The system uses clear, acrylic trays that straighten teeth just like braces and are much more comfortable. Clear aligners are nice because you can remove them to eat so you don’t have to feel like you can’t eat something. They can also be removed when you brush and floss your teeth so that your oral hygiene does not suffer while you are wearing braces.
Conventional Orthodontics
We use braces to treat many orthodontic irregularities such as overcrowded teeth, malocclusions (bad bites), and much more. We also work to relieve the jaw pain of those who suffer from TMD. Most often we use the traditional metal and wire braces. They are also known as fixed “tram track” braces.
Retainers
After you have worn your braces for the appropriate amount of time, we move into the retention stage of your treatment. It is very important not to skip this step or all of your hard work will not pay off as you had hoped. Your teeth may move back instead of staying in place. During retention, you will have to wear retainers as your teeth adjust to staying in their new place without braces. You should wear your retainers as recommended by your dentist. Some can be worn only at night, while others need to be worn almost all of the time.
Airway Obstruction / Snoring / Sleep Apnea
Optimizing the jaw sizes by widening the jaws during early interceptive treatment is a proactive treatment approach to help remove the dental /jaw causes of airway obstruction. By widening the jaws, additional tongue space is available which allows the tongue to be held farther forward away from the back of the throat increasing airway size. It also increases the width of the floor of the nose and can help reduce the soft palate from obstructing the airway.
Orthognathic Surgery or OGS to surgically advance one or both jaws and to widen the upper jaw is a perhaps the most effective way to improve the airway on a more permanent basis.
MSE
Dr. Quast offers the MSE appliance (maxillary skeletal expander).
The MSE can in many cases widen the adult upper jaw. It is used in young to middle age adults and in cases as an alternative to the SARPE – the surgical palatal expansion procedure.
